Chapter 12

Liszt's “Dante” Sonata - John Browning, pianist

When John Browning speaks, he betrays a lexiconic knowledge of the piano repertoire and does so with all humility but full intellectual and practical expertise.

When John Browning plays he does so with a similar humility, having no exaggerated mannerisms and he speaks with a focused voice that tells stories eloquently which never fall on deaf ears.

His “Dante” Sonata, formally entitled “After a Reading of Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata,”  a piece not often found in concert programmes anymore despite its powerful dramatic effect.

Browning’s playing is elegant, highly dramatic and so greatly communicative, always managing to draw attention away from himself until the final note is sounded - at which time one realizes one has been in the care of a true master and servant all along.
